Biography

Dr. McDaniel is the Dr Laurie Sands Distinguished Professor of Families & Health. She is Director of the Institute for the Family in the Department of Psychiatry, Associate Chair of the Department of Family Medicine, and Director of the Physician Faculty Patient- and Family-Centered Care Communication Coaching Program at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where she has been since beginning her career in 1980. Her special areas of interest are integrated behavioral/mental health in primary care, and integrated care for genetic conditions and reproduction. She is a frequent speaker at meetings of both health and mental health professionals.

Dr. McDaniel is the author of over 100 journal articles, and numerous book chapters. She was co-editor with Tom Campbell MD of the interdisciplinary journal, Families, Systems & Health, for 12 years, and is now an Associate Editor of the American Psychologist. She co-authored Medical Family Therapy, Primary Care Psychology, Family-oriented Primary Care and 12 other books, which have been translated into 8 languages.

Dr McDaniel is the 2016 President of the American Psychological Assn. She has received many awards, most recently the the Cummings Foundation/American Psychological Foundation PSYCHE prize in 2008 for her contributions to integrated mental and physical health care, the Donald Bloch MD Award for Outstanding Contributions to Collaborative Care in 2009, the Recognition Award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine in 2011, the Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman national Mentoring prize in 2012, a Leadership Award from both Women in Psychology and the Division of Health Psychology in 2013, a Distinguished Service Award from Family Psychology and an Award of Appreciation from the Committee of Early Career Psychologists in 2015.
